Tyres

Tyres have a limited useful life. The responsibility for collecting used tyres rests with the parties that produce, manufacture, import and sell tyres. In Sweden around 60 000 tyres are collected every year as waste.

For tyres that cannot be reused, processed as retreads or recycled, for example as jumping mats or rubber granulate for sports facilities - we make use of the energy and material by using it as alternative fuel in the cement process.

Both whole and shredded tyres can be used. Whole tyres are delivered to the cement factory by truck or boat directly from the collection station. Tyres are shredded at plants with permits for this kind of activity, where whole tyres are shredded into pieces of approx. 50 x 50 mm. The metal content in the form of steel cord and studs remains in the tyre pieces and becomes a part of the raw material for the cement.

The tyre fuel is stored in the same way as coal, i.e. in heaps that are kept separate from other combustible material.

Each delivery is checked on arrival against defined quality and safety criteria.
